December 18, 2010 was a day Princeton Elementary school Principal Nancy Doerner says she'll never forget. And it turned out to be a nightmare for one of the school's teachers, Kristen Brandon.
"She lost her son Lawson in a tragic four-wheel accident," Doerner says. Lawson, age 8, died after being thrown from an A-T-V. "He was very much a part of our school community and when he passed away we wanted to do some things to help remember him."

But it wasn't just the school hoping to honor Lawson, the entire Haughton community came together to remember the child. Doerner says that's how Lawson's Legacy was born. They started by building a climbing wall and dedicated a memory garden outside the school, to Lawson and all others who've been loved and lost. "It's something that students can relate to and it gives us a way to show that he's gone but we want to do good things in his memory. We make sure they understand it's not just about remembering Lawson but also about remembering the others that served our country or have been part of our school communit," saying Doerner.

A school and community coming together, remembering a child's legacy and turning a dark moment into a brighter one.
