As the NAACP celebrates their 103rd birthday nationally, the Shreveport chapter remembers their historic past, and plans for the future.  Local leaders held a founders day ceremony this afternoon at a Shreveport church.     For over a century, the mission hasn't changed.  Members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have fought the good fight.

"Show this community the longevity of this organization that has been fighting for civil rights and justice for all people for 103 years," said Thompson.

Thompson marked the national anniversary of the group with a special Founder's Day celebration.  It's about remembering how far they've come, but knowing there's still more work to do.

"Telephone, email, facebook page we're coming into the 21st century - moving forward," said Thompson.

The Shreveport chapter of the NAACP continues to make history, like their recent victory removing the confederate flag, from a monument outside the Caddo Parish Courthouse.

Joe Wills has been a member for over fifty years, since he was only 16 years old.

"I was fighting ever since I was young and we still out there," said Wills.

He was part of a complaint that ultimately reapportioned Shreveport so black people could get elected to office.

"My wife she reaped the benefits because she got elected as one of the first black police jurors in the state of Louisiana," said Wills.

Keeping that spirit alive is key to the growth of the Shreveport chapter.  President Thompson hopes this Founder's Day event brings the struggle home to the younger generation.

"I think once they learn about us, they'll want to be a part of us," said Thompson.

The Shreveport chapter of Women in the NAACP, known as WIN, is  holding a celebrity fashion show Friday, March 9th at 7 P.M.  Tickets are $25.  For information on the event you can call Barbara Marshall at 318-751-1351 or email her at naacp1856@yahoo.com
