Ordinance Will Help Crackdown On Copper And Metal Thefts

Updated: February 6, 2007
Two local churches have been hit back to back police say they were a target for thieves stealing cooper from air conditioning units. Police say thieves might get thirty to forty dollars for the metals, leaving the church with five thousand dollars worth of damage. This is the type of crime police and city leaders want to eliminate. Council members passed an ordinance to help stop the problem. But both scrap metal dealers and detectives believe thieves will still commit the crimes. "What they do is they`ll cut it up. Theyll tear it up. Theyll metal it down. Theyll paint it. Theyll disrupt its original appearance in any form or fashion." Scrap metal dealers even try to alert police when they can. They usually call them when someone brings in material that is questionable. The new ordinance will take the process a step further scrap metal dealers will be asked to send police a detailed report of all transactions, making it easier for police to investigate these crimes.
