Women's Health Week: Cervical Cancer

By: Leslie Draffin
Updated: February 3, 2012
Dr. Glen Mills and R.N. Tracey Nolte from LSU Hospital say cervical cancer is mostly caused by HPV.  This sexually transmitted disease can be contracted at a young age and may not cause cervical cancer for many years. That's why its so important to have pap smears no matter your age.

Mills says older women account for 20% of new cervical cancer cases each year and many don't realize they're at risk.

While pap smears aren't something many women look forward to, Nolte stresses that the test is simple, quick and painless.  She says it is the one tool to test for cervical cancer and saves lives.
