Gary Joiner is part of a support group for the Mansfield battlefield where one of the most important victories was won during the civil war. Joiner is on a mission to preserve the battlefield. He uses it as a teaching tool to show his students what happened during the civil war. Right now Joiner is upset a lignite mine sits on the south end of the battlefield. Electric companies are mining for a low grade of coal. He says the process is even disturbing unmarked union graves.
"It does devastating damage to the ground. Simply because it a stripe mine."
Even though the dirt is being put back after it`s dug up the battlefield will never be the same. Joiner says part of the battlefield is protected by the state. Meanwhile he`s doing what he can to protect the rest by stalling the electric companies mining the battlefield.
