On each Saturday in February at 1 p.m., Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center will feature presentations, programs and activities celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans throughout history and in our own community.
Each week will have a different theme, and visitors have ongoing opportunities to learn something new about a historically-rich culture.
Themes for Sci-Port's Black History Month celebration include:
February 5: Medicine
Crystal Brown-Tatum of Crystal Clear Communications will present her personal battle with breast cancer as an African American and how her illness resulted in her becoming a published author.
February 12: Music & Dance
Visitors will take a look at stomp, a culturally unique dance which expanded into an art form.
February 19: Art
The Pamoja Cultural Center will have a presentation highlighting African American art that dates from 1503 BC to 1991.
February 26: Space & Engineering
Sci-Port's Astronomy Program Leader Greg Andrews will discuss many of the contributions to Space and Engineering from African Americans.
Programs are included with admission to the Center.
