Updated: December 21, 2010

The number of violent crimes in the U.S. is falling.

The FBI says preliminary figures show that type of crime fell by more than 6% for the first half of 2010.

There was a more than 7% drop in murders.

The report released Monday by the bureau doesn't give a reason for the decline.

However, it noted it's part of an overall downward trend which has lasted more than three years.
