A man who randomly shot a horse that later died was arrested Monday for criminal cruelty to an animal, said Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator.

Xavier Strickland, 21, of 3021 Skelly Street, was arrested by Caddo sheriff's deputies and booked into the Caddo Correctional Center. His bond was set at $50,276.

Witnesses said the horse, a 16-year-old Appaloosa mare, was running loose down North Lakeshore Drive on the morning of Nov. 13 when Strickland slowly drove past it in his vehicle and randomly shot it in its mid-section. An employee at a nearby business called deputies about the injured horse, and it was taken to Vivian Animal Hospital where it later died.

Strickland was identified through information received from the Shreveport Police Department.  A warrant for his arrest was obtained by Deputy Justin McDonnell of the Caddo Sheriff's Office and Agent Carnie Burcham of the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission, who jointly investigated the case.
