Free HIV Screenings at the Bayou Classic

By: Nancy Cook
Updated: November 23, 2010

No-cost HIV testing will be available for fans at the 37th annual Bayou Classic between the Southern University Jaguars and the Grambling State University Tigers, which will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday,  Nov. 27 in New Orleans’ Superdome.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals DHH, OraSure Technologies, Inc., and the Kaiser Family Foundation's "Greater Than AIDS" movement will provide the screenings to fans.

The free screenings are an effort to arm Louisiana's African-American community with valuable knowledge about HIV. African-Americans make up 32 percent of Louisiana's population, yet they represented 75 percent of new HIV diagnoses in the state in 2009.
