In light of the lagging economy, Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has decided to forgo the festive Inaugural ball in favor of an early-evening reception to which citizens are asked to bring canned goods for the city’s less fortunate.
The reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Barnwell Center, 601 Clyde Fant Parkway and will conclude the day of Inaugural activities.
“Considering the tough economic times that Shreveport, our state and nation have faced, a reception will take the place of the Inaugural Gala held four years ago,” Glover said. “I believe the citizens of Shreveport, including our youth and school children, should be able to greet and meet their recently-elected City leaders. The Inaugural Reception will provide a unique avenue for such greetings.”
The inauguration of Glover for his second term of office Council will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Shreveport Convention Center. The installation of members of the 2010-2014 Shreveport City Council will follow.
New council members-elect are Rose Wilson-McCulloch, Jeffrey S. Everson, Oliver G. Jenkins, Michael David Corbin, Ron Webb, Joe Shyne and Samuel L. Jenkins, Jr. and incumbents are Joe Shyne and Ron Webb.
The mayor is asking citizens to lend a helping hand to area needy by encouraging all attendees of either the Inauguration or the Inaugural Reception to bring with them a can good or other non-perishable food item to support the philanthropic work of the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank.
Glover and community volunteers will deliver all items to the Food Bank on Wednesday, November 24, one day before Thanksgiving.
The Inauguration Ceremony and the Inaugural Reception are free and open to the public. No public dollars are being used to pay for either inaugural event.
