Shreveport, LA-- LSUS Pilots (4-0) point guard and floor general Freddy Hughes continued his stellar play on the court for the Pilots Monday night at The Dock. The 510 senior from Southwood High School flirted with a triple-double, collecting 16-points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, while leading the Pilots to a 90-78 victory over the visiting Philander Smith College Panthers (1-3). Kyile Byrd poured in 15 first half points leading the Pilots to a 49-35 lead at the break. The Pilots coasted through most of the second half with a lead as large as 22-points, but a late 25-9 run by the Panthers cut the score to 82-76 with 2:16 remaining in the contest. The Panthers however connected on just one field goal in the remaining 2:00 forcing them to foul and send the Pilots to the line to stop the clock. The Pilots connected on 7-of-9 attempts down the stretch to hold off the charging Panthers, holding on to a 90-78 decision. Johnny Lewis finished with a game high 26-points and 10-rebounds to lead the Panthers offense. Rodney Warren, Tommy Bozeman, Darren Jamison, and Willie Henry all finished with 13-points in the losing effort. Pilots leading scorer Blake Whittle finished with a team high 24-points and added six rebounds. Byrd finished with a season high 19-points and six boards while Greg Tyer added 16-points and nine rebounds. The Pilots finished shooting a season high 52% (34-of-66) from the field and also added a season high six blocks on the defensive end. LSUS now must turn their focus to Friday night when they will travel to Waxahachie, TX for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Classic. The Pilots will take on SAGU Friday night at 8:00pm, and will turn around for a 4:00pm match-up Saturday against the defending 2006 NAIA National Champion, Texas Wesleyan University Rams.
