MONROE, La. -- The ULM Warhawks took the practice field for the first time
today in preparation for the 2006 season. 103 players were on the first
practice roster by 4 p.m. as the 2005 Sun Belt Champions prepare to defend
their title.
Practice Notes:
*Quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster and receiver Joe Merritt missed practice this
afternoon to prepare for summer school finals on Thursday morning. Summer
Session II classes end on Friday. They are expected to be at practice from
here on out.
*With Lancaster taking care of school work, sophomore Chance Payne, redshirt
freshman Darrell McNeal, and freshmen Trey Revell (pronounced revil, like
devil) and Josh Boudreaux took the majority of the snaps in practice. Payne
and McNeal worked with the first team, while Revell and Boudreaux worked
with the second team.
*McNeal didn`t get to wear the gold jersey like the other quarterbacks at
practice today. McNeal will see time on the playing field this season in
the same way that Lancaster saw action in 2005, more of a slash role.
McNeal worked his way into each receiver position during drills today.
*Fans thought they were seeing things today when the player wearing jersey
No. 24 was not playing first team defense. However they did see No. 1 on
first team defense and had to look up the name. After two seasons wearing
No. 24, senior corner back Chaz Williams will wear the No. 1 jersey in 2006.
Freshman defensive back Greg James also made a jersey change from spring
ball to #2.
*After experimenting at running back in the spring, senior Chris Freeman has
returned to the defensive side of the ball at safety.
*A reminder that practices are open to the public. Updated rosters will be
available at practice each day.
