NATCHITOCHES – Three of the five Northwestern State Demon baseball players drafted in this past MLB First-Year Player’s Draft have already begun their professional career – Chase Lyles, Oscar Garcia, and Chad Sheppard.

Lyles ranks second on his team in hitting with a .375 batting average in seven games as a member of the State College Spikes, a Class A Short-Season team affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates out of the New York-Penn League.

In those seven games, he’s had multiple hits three times, has a triple, and has driven in four runs. He’s also scored seven runs and has a stolen base.

Garcia is a member of the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A Short-Season team affiliated with the San Diego Padres and he leads the team in hitting with a .435 batting average.

He has hit safely in all five games he’s played in and has multiple hits in the last four.  In a recent four-game series against TC, Garcia went 9-for-19 (.474) from the plate.

Sheppard has yet to throw an inning for the Brooklyn Cyclones, a Class A Short-Season team with the New York Mets.

Also playing pro ball from Northwestern State is Miles Durham who is a member of the Pirates’ Double-A Altoona Curve team.  For the season, Durham is hitting .237 with four home runs and 33 RBIs, ranking tied for fifth on the team.
