There are a lot of happy campers this week at Rainbow Camp. Kids fighting Muscular Dystrophy participate in activities at no cost. It's held annually at Camp Bethany in Caddo Parish. The campers participate in sporting events, swimming, crafts and have plenty of fun. It's something they look forward to all year. 58-kids enjoyed the Rainbow Camp safari themed carnival on Wednesday night. "They come out of their shell and just blossom. And it's just so much fun to see them just be kids and play" says Tanya Volkmer, a volunteer. But behind the smiles and laughter, there are struggles. Every child at Rainbow Camp has been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. Some do not show any signs yet, others are in leg braces or wheelchairs. "I still enjoy life no matter what. Even though I’m in a wheelchair" says 17-year old Ross Grinball. With help from volunteers, he shot his first paintball gun. "It was a new experience." This is his 11th and last trip to Rainbow Camp. Next year, Grinball will be too old. "It's been fun, I get to meet new people, I get to do things that other people get to do outside" he says. Modifications to carnival games make it easy for 8-year old TJ Wall to bowl a strike."It's just like regular bowling" he says. "It's fun because at home sometimes you usually wouldn't get to do the stuff you get to do here." During the MDA Labor Day telethon, put on by NBC 6, you can help sponsor a child for camp by making a pledge. Any amount is welcome.

We will have more information on the telethon and how you can help in the coming months.
