AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 3 Texas Longhorns were named the No. 2 national seed for the 2009 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the NCAA Selection Committee announced on Monday.
The Longhorns, who were announced as a host on Sunday, are grouped with the Rice Owls, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and Rider Broncs for play at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The four teams will play in a double-elimination regional with Louisiana facing Rice at 1 p.m. and Texas hosting Rider at 6:30 p.m. on June 4.
As a top eight national seed, Texas is guaranteed to host a super regional if they advance past the regional round. The winner of the Austin Regional will face the winner of the Fort Worth Regional (Arizona, Baylor, Lamar, TCU) for the right to play in the College World Series.
Since the NCAA began awarding eight teams with a "National Seed" in 1999, Texas has earned a top eight designation on five prior occasions, including the top seed in 2004 and 2009.
The other seven national seeds include No. 1 Arizona State, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Coastal Carolina, No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Louisville and No. 8 Georgia Tech.
Texas is looking for its seventh national title. The Longhorns won College World Series crowns in 1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002 and 2005.
The Burnt Orange won the Big 12 regular-season title by an eight-game margin, finishing with a league record 24-3 mark in conference play and the Horns currently own a 46-11 overall mark.
