A recent Wall Street Journal article states just two years ago kids consumed more than 1 billion dollars worth of vitamin supplements. In some cases the vitamins were deemed necessary, while in others they were not. A local pediatrician told NBC 6 News it's all about a child's diet. If he or she is receiving the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables vitamins are usually not needed. However, Dr. Abbey Carroll warns many preschoolers and toddlers do not have a balanced diet. "An over the counter vitamin typically is sufficient," said Dr. Abbey Carroll, Pierremont Pediatrics. "It has plenty of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin D, as well as iron."Carroll says when kids start school and get the proper nutritional education the need for vitamins decreases. A local pharmacist told NBC 6 News if you give your child vitamins make sure you do your homework. Doug Boudreaux says currently vitamin companies aren't required to have federal regulations.
