Make It Possible For Any Girl To Attend a Formal in Style

    SUSAN’S CLOSET

Susan’s Closet, A benefit for the Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, to be held February 20, 2010 at First Baptist Church Gymnasium in Shreveport

Benton local, Brenda Norton, had a novel idea last year, to make it possible for any girl to attend a formal in style and feel like a princess, even if they could not afford a dress.  In addition to helping young girls, she also wanted to help find a cure for breast cancer. As a health care professional for STAT Home Health, she has assisted many patients who are breast cancer survivors, but has also experienced the heartache when some of those patients lose their battle.    An official partnership was established with the Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the summer and in September of 2009, the first Susan's Closet event was held bringing in over $1400 which was donated to the local affiliate.

Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. a 2nd event will be hosted at the First Baptist Church gymnasium in Shreveport, at 543 Ockley Drive. Girls and their parents from all over over the ARK-LA-TEX area are invited to peruse the racks of many beautiful, current, and gently used formal dresses which will be donated from locals and sold for $25 each regardless of the original purchase price of the dress, (3 dress maximum per girl) and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Northwest Louisiana affiliate of Susan G. Komen of the Cure. An educational table with literature for young women will be an integral part of the event giving every girl and her parent, an opportunity to learn a lifesaving breast health message and encourage them to be proactive in their health.

Susan's Closet needs gently used current, formal gowns of all sizes to be donated to make this event a success.  Many of you have dresses hanging in your closet and have wondered what to do with them.  By donating your gowns to Susan's Closet, you will be able to help many girls who may not have the opportunity to attend their special events with pride. You will also be helping the local affiliate find a cure for breast cancer and providing local women with needed mammograms and educational services.  Please donate your dresses at any of our sponsor's locations any time before February 20th during their regular business hours. Please drop off dresses that would be appropriate for any event that a high-school girl would wear to prom, pageant, ball, etc.  Drop off locations include:

    • Any Porter's Cleaners in Shreveport or  Bossier
    • Strandz Hair Design on Hwy 157 in Haughton
    • Hers Bridal Shop on Main St. in Minden
    • Flowers for You at the Portico Shopping Center in Shreveport

Please be sure the donated dresses can be distinguished from other dresses by attaching a note designating the dress as being intended for Susan’s Closet. If you should require a donation receipt for your dress or dresses, contact the Northwest Louisiana affiliate at 318 220 7050 and one will be provided.

Over 75 percent of all funds generated by the Komen Northwest Louisiana Affiliate though the Race for the Cure® and fundraising events like Susan’s Closet, stay in Northwest Louisiana while the remaining income goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs supporting research, awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. Texas has a new sex offender registry.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has unveiled the complete redesign of the state's public website allowing users to now subscribe to email notifications about changes in a specific zip code or to a specific offender's record.

The redesign also allows the public access to additional information about specific offenders, including their complete work address, whether the offender attends an institution of higher education and Texas and out-of-state sex offenses.

Enhanced mapping allows users to search by name, address, zip code and county.

DPS sex offender registry personnel will also be able to easier reconcile the sex offender database with the Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center.

    • Allow yourself to be upset or even afraid. These are natural reactions. However, should they become intense, be willing to seek professional help. Talking things through and hearing another person's perspective can bring relief and restore your positive outlook.

    • Resist the urge to tell your boss what you truly think of him or her. Remember, you may need him or her as a reference for a future job.

    • Take advantage of any assistance your workplace offers. Many companies provide placement assistance, job retraining and severance packages. Make sure you are aware of all benefits offered.

    • Apply for any applicable government benefits. Your HR representative at work will be a good resource.

    • Resist the urge to solve your problems by spending recklessly. It may feel good for the moment, but the high of spending won't equal the low of dealing with additional debt when there is no income.

Keep Your Pets Safe in a Hurricane

The 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 and is expected to bring 12 named storms, with six of those becoming hurricanes.

Preparing your family is half the task facing residents of hurricane-prone areas.  There's also the matter of your pets; planning to evacuate or taking shelter against the devastating storms requires initial planning.

PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance suggests preparing a Pet Evacuation Kit in the event of an evacuation or storm threat.

Here's a checklist of emergency items to include in your Pet Evacuation Kit.

--  All pets should wear an identification tag and collar

--  At least one week's supply of food in water-tight container

--  At least one week's supply of water

--  Leash and harness for dogs and cats

--  Appropriate size pet carrier for dogs and cats

--  Make sure vaccinations are up to date

--  Copies of updated vaccination certificates (required by shelters)

--  Pet medications (including heartworm / flea prevention)

--  Litter box, litter for cats

--  Updated photos of your pet in case they get lost

--  Your pet's favorite toy to help calm nerves

You should also identify evacuation sites and research pet accommodations. Make calls now to check on the boarding policies of the local kennels, animal shelters or hotels and ensure you add any of these requirements to your Pet Evacuation Kit.

Many lessons were learned from recent storm tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina when storm victims encountered evacuation shelters that did not allow pets. As a result, some pet owners refused to evacuate without their pets or had to do the unthinkable, abandon them.
