Reported by: Erica Bennett Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @05:52pm CST Each year, programs like "Operation Santa Claus and "Toys for Tots" bring holiday cheer to thousands of needy children. This year, the number in need could go up.
"I think we'll have more requests this year. Far more than last year," 1st Sgt. Cedric Donald with the U.S. Marine Corps said. Donald says the tough economy is the number one reason for the increase. He says despite tough times, just one toy can light up a child. "I think it impacts them hugely. Our whole goal is to collect toys for those that can't afford, but need toys. Toys for Tots slogan is "no child should go without a toy for Christmas," he said. It's not too early to get a head start on donations. Boxes are already set up in different locations around Shreveport-Bossier. Deborah Caron is a long-time toys for tots for giver. She says sharing is a big part of her holiday season. "I always grew up having a wonderful Christmas and I can't stand the ideas of some little child not having something at Christmas ime and I just think it's very important," she said. Caron encourages others to take on the same attitude. Most of the organizations have picked their recipients, but you still have time to donate gifts. Toys For Tots is accepting donations through December 21st. "Operation Santa Claus" is accepting monetary donations at Citizens Bank. You can also contact the Shreveport Fire Department, the Shreveport Police Department or the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office to find out where to drop off toys. Contact the Salvation Army if you want to adopt an "angel" from the Angel Tree. |
