Reported by: Erica Bennett Sunday, Nov 1, 2009 @07:30pm CST Dangerous flood waters have prompted a voluntarily evacuation in Webster Parish.
"It's gonna take a long time for this to go down. There's no place for it to go," resident Mike Jarrett said. Emergency officials say despite encouraging people to leave...most havent. "Most of these people have been through this numerous times. They know what to expect. They know as well as we do what the crest levels are and what they mean for them in particular," Webster Parish Homeland Security Director John Stanley said. Take willis carter. Instead of packing up and heading out, he's making the most of it by...fishing. "We had plenty of time to make arrangements, get everything up, up off the ground before it got wet fortunately our house is not wet. Just have to get in and out by boat," he said. Several homes around the Dorcheat Bayou area are already under water. Officials say if it crests in the next several days like expected, even more could be in jeopardy. "I'm hoping and praying it doesn't get any higher and get into our house," resident Terry Frazier said. Frazier says she's crossing her fingers and hoping the bayou doesn't crest. Unlike her flooded neighbors, she still has some time to prep her home. "We've got some sand bags put up around our doors. The way the house is built, we couldn't really put them around the whole house but we're hoping if the water comes up, we'll be able to keep it out of our house," she said. Emergency officials say if you do decide to ride it out, be smart until the waters go down. "Be aware of the situation. Stay out of the water. Dont drive through the water," Stanely said. Emergency management officials plan on monitoring the lake and bayou levels over the next several days. If you have any requests for emergency services or reports of damages, you're encouraged to call 9-1-1. Sandbags are available at several different locations around Webster Parish. You can pick some up at the fire house near downtown Doyline and at the Sibley Parish barn on Creighton Road in Sibley. If you have an urgent need for sandbags, the number to call is 318-377-15-15 |
