Local Resident Has Unique Recycling Plan

A walk through A.C. Steere Park and you'll probably notice plastic bins sitting by trash cans.

It's an effort, started by a Broadmoor resident, to get park goers to recycle.

Charles Goldthwaite is trying to make a difference at a broadmoor hot spot.

" I was walking through the park one day and noticed a bunch of litter bottles on the grounds," said Goldthwaite.

Three years ago he started picking up trash in A.C. Steere Park and realized most of it was recyclable.

And that's how it all started.

    I
t didn't take much to start his efforts, just some blue plastic bins and some decals.

Each week Goldthwaite collects nearly 150 items from the bins.

In three years he has recycled more than 16,000 cans and plastic bottles from the park.

Before curbside recycling, he had to take his items to the city's collection center.

    But not anymore.

"I count everything, so that I have some data of how much is being collected and then I dump it in to my blue curbside bin."

    His purpose...

"I wanted to, at least for my portion of this, not have a carbon foot print.

I walk over to the park, manually get everything and put it in my curbside bin, which is going to be picked up anyway."

And it's something that anyone can do.

"It is as simple as just setting up a bin next to the garbage can and telling people to recycle," said Goldthwaite.

Goldthwaite wants to present his data about recycling to S.P.A.R.
In hopes, recycling bins can be placed at other public parks.
