  • Red Ball Express Veteran Travels to DC

    Friday, Apr 24, 2009 @04:00pm CDT

It was the moment of a lifetime when 84-year-old World War II veteran Lamore Carter arrived in Washington DC to see war memorials set up in his honor.

"63 years is a long time," said Carter. "You forget a lot."

However what Carter does remember is vivid.

"We went on boats in the middle of the night across the English channel landing on the beach in France."

At the time Carter was only 19 years old. He graduated from high school just a month before he was drafted. Even at that age he was asked to lead as a Platoon Sergeant in the legendary Red Ball Express.

"We were pushed to the limit. I was hospitalized from the constant being on the road and the pressure of being a leader," said Carter. "We had the responsibility of getting supplies."

Carter delivered supplies like ammunition and gas. But, making the trip from pick-up to drop-off proved almost as dangerous as fighting on the frontline.

"This was war time and no one was playing," said Carter. "Often we'd bypass Germans who were hiding, who were in the rear shooting at Americans."

Carter tells KTAL only one thing got him through.

"When I left Boston going overseas I said bring me back Lord. He did."

All these memories came rushing back as Carter captured every moment and once more he was a victor.

"To see this and be lucky enough to talk to reporters about it," said Carter. "I'm winning. I'm just delighted."

The GI Bill helped Carter continue to serve his country after the war was over. He enrolled in college just one month after his duty ended. He ultimately earned a PHD, served as provost at Grambling State University, and President of Wily College.
