But seniors at Woodridge Baptist Church are learning to protect themselves with the help of local law enforcement. Along with a Valentines themed lunch, they learned the ins and outs of scam protection. Thanks to Sergeant Mickey McDaniel. "For the most part, scams can happen to anybody." He explained to the group some of the scams out there. Prize and Sweepstakes scams were at the top of his list. "Anytime you wire money to someone you don't know, it is a scam." Home Improvement fraud. He says never let anyone make repairs or do work who isn't licensed. "It is always good to check the state website to find out who the licensed contractors are." Phishing, when someone calls requesting your personal information. "You always want to avoid giving your information over the phone unless you call." And Internet fraud and Identity Theft. "You want to look out for phishing e-mails, you want to look out for letters." Mamie McNeal says she gets calls often and letters in the mail. "I get that in the mail all the time and I just tear it up and throw it in the trash." Sergeant McDaniel says common sense is the key to not becoming victim. "We just want people to be informed to protect themselves and their money." If you would like Sergeant McDaniel to speak to your group or organization call the Caddo Sheriff's Office. |
