  • Former High School Teacher Arrested
    Reported by: Erica Bennett

    Tuesday, Dec 30, 2008 @05:36pm CST

"This isn't something that I'd just think Mr. Bates would do," Huntington student DeAndre Bates said.

"No one would ever suspect that he would do something like that," former student Malvanese Williams said.

To students at Huntington High School, Brandon Bates is a cool guy and was a good teacher.

To police, he is a man facing several charges, including indecency with a juvenile. Early Christmas morning, a Greenwood police officer stopped Bates at Highway 80 and Jefferson Paige Road. The officer said his car was parked on a dead end street and looked suspicious. According to the police report, after the officer tried to pull bates over, he drove off. When he was finally stopped the officer found Bates with his pants undone and a 16-year old girl in the car.

In the report, the teen told the officer Bates picked her up from her home while her parents were asleep. She said they planned on having sex.

KTAL attempted to speak with Bates, but family members had no comment.

But some of his former students did.

"We got the same last name, so I used to call him my uncle. I never imagined him to do something like this. When I heard about it, I didn't think it was true," student DeAndre Bates said.

They tell us he often interacted with students, but never innapropriately. And that he was an all-around good guy.

"He was nice. He got along with all the students. And everyone was just really cool with Mr. Bates," former student Malvanese Williams said.

"He played alot. He was interactive with the students, but not like that," Bates continued.

Bates was bonded out of Caddo Correctional Center on Monday. He is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment January 26th.
