  • Local Pawn Shops and Jewelry Stores See Major Increases
    Reported by: Amber Miller

While small businesses are taking a hit, local pawn shops and jewelry stores are seeing more customers. However, it's not always what the customer buy that helps.

"People are wanting to raise some money and this is a good way for them to get money without having to do anything wrong," said Paul Little, Bailey's Jewelers co-owner.

Little says more and more people are bringing in jewelry hoping to get money from a re-sale. However, Little warns the money might not come quickly.

"Consignment’s not a quick way but, it's a good way if they have a piece, unusual jewelry they want to sell and want to make some good money on it," said Little.

Jewelry stores aren't the only places seeing people giving up what they have for what they need. Shreveport's Cash in a Flash Pawn Shop owner says since May, he's seen about a 30 percent increase in business.

"Some people are bringing in their flat screen TVs that they just got or they're bringing in their big wedding rings," said Allan Matthews, Cash in a Flash Pawn Shop owner. "They're still married. They're bringing in their wedding rings to borrow money."

One customer brought in old tires and walked out with 200 dollars. Another customer didn't bring anything in but, he also walked away with a deal.

"The equipment might not be new but you get better deals," said Larry Lampkin, Cash in a Flash customer.

In fact, Lampkin says he saves about 50 percent at pawn shops and that money is put to good use.

"You can use that other 40 to 50 percent to put more gas in your car, buy more food, pay some of your regular bills that you have to pay monthly," said Lampkin.
