  • Haynesville Shale Job Fair Draws Plenty of Hopefuls
    Reported by: Erica Bennett

    Wednesday, Oct 29, 2008 @05:06pm CDT

Deontray Jackson knows the Haynesville Shale means big money.

"We haven't seen this type of money come to the area since the casino's came in. People have been kind of down and out, but when the casinos came they had a big turnout like this. And ever since then, that's the last time we've seen some money like that come this way," he said.

He already has a job but Wednesday he spent nearly two hours in line trying to get a better one.

"When the money does get here, it's gonna be alot of people happy they had to stand in that line however long they did," he said with a laugh.

The drilling projects have somewhat tapered off in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. David Rockett with the Bossier Cconomic Development Foundation says workers are needed to get back on track.

"It's kind of like the cart before the horse. We've got alot of product to get out of there, but we have to have someone pull it out of the ground and pull it to the marketplace," he said.

Our local gas find is one of the largest in the world. Rockett says that means more than enough jobs for the area.

"If you look at history, even from Ft.Worth and the Barnett Shale, the number of jobs created would be a life changing opportunity. If we do a quarter of the jobs created for that, it will be a life changing opportunity," he finished.

After today all thirteen companies will take a vote to see if a future job fair is necessary.
