Reported by: Shelli Briery Tuesday, Sep 16, 2008 @11:57am CDT There is work to aging gracefully but it's not hard for seniors.
All it takes is about 30 minutes every other day in the gym. Fitting exercise into a day's schedule can have major benefits. It can help with Heart Disease, Arthritis, High Blood Pressure and Diabetes. "If you don't use it, you can lose it," said Exercise Tech, Janine Bratton. At Christus Schumpert Wellness Center, 60 percent of the members are over the age of 50. "It makes me feel good, it is the magic pill." Kathleen Hicks has been working out at the center for 10 years. She's 78 years-old and spends at least 4 hours a week doing some type of cardio. "I had walked five miles a day, five days a week and I thought I was in good shape. I came up here and realized what bad shape I was really in." Bratton says 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week in the gym is a great way to preserve one's health and lifestyle. Walking, swimming; there are easy ways to stay in shape. "To maintain muscle tone, bone density, cardiovascular activities... Just for everyday activities like picking up branches in the yard to shopping at Wal-Mart, you want to remain active so you can keep yourself independent." Bratton says seniors need to check with a doctor before taking on a exercise regiment. Just to make sure its safe. "The work is worth it a lot and when they come in, they feel better afterwards." She says as seniors become used to the exercising, the intensity can slowly be increased. |
