  • Senior Quilters Hard At Work

At the Mrytle B. Pickering Senior Center nestled in a back room you'll find a group of ladies hard at work. They say it is just having fun. "We eat, we greet, we meet and we work," said Vencine Winston-Palmer. They spend hours each day creating beautiful quilts. "It is just as important for the other side to be straight as it is the top." Palmer has only been quilting for eight months, she's on her second work of art. She says when a quilt is given as a gift, it is to be cherished. "It is a gift of love, you don't have to buy it rolled out, it speaks for itself." "I didn't know how to quilt when I first came," said Roselie Dyches. Dyches says quilts are about freedom of expression; stitch by stitch. "It is mostly what you are thinking and what you want to make. It will be beautiful to you and someone else might not like it." The women work by themselves and in a group, while talking about everyone and everything. They laugh and cry and make the most of countless hours and a hard day's work. And their work is not for sale. They give it away to friends and family. " You just put so much love in it and when you give it to them, most of mine have been given to children and grand children," said Lula Jacobs. The quilts are made from scratch with donated material. The ladies say if you have some scraps, just bring them by the center.
