The older you get, the more you're at risk for Shingles. About half of the nearly 1 million Shingles cases in the United States occur in people over the age of 60. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox and if you've had it you are at risk. "The virus will remain dormant in your nerves and can reactivate later on," said Doctor Susan Kemp. Kemp says there is a preventative vaccine to keep risks down for seniors, it is suggested for people 60 and older. For those infected, the virus can be extremely painful. "It will usually cause a lot of severe pain and burring in one distinct area of your body, then it will form a rash with clear blisters." The older a patient, the longer the Shingles rash may last. "Sometimes it can last from months to years," said Kemp. Kemp says talking with a doctor about the vaccination and treatment options is the best advice she can give. "A little ounce of prevention can prevent a lot of pain later on." Medicare will cover the cost of a Shingles vaccination. |
