Reported by: Shelli Briery Tuesday, Aug 19, 2008 @02:23pm CDT There is a new center open in Shreveport, working to meet the needs of seniors and the disabled.
LATAN's Device Demonstration Program is now available to help residents discover their own freedoms. "My eye sight is going down ,so you know; I can't read." 86 year-old, Mary Pinchera heard about LATAN's Device Center and rushed right in, looking for a device to make reading a bit easier. "We want you to have the right thing that works for you in your home and your environment," said Program Director, Susie Stewart. Stewart was among those who helped open the center on Tuesday. Senators Buddy Shaw and Lydia Jackson cut the blue ribbon at the center opening a door of freedom for those seeking Assistive Technology. "I just think it is incredible that there is a way to assist those people; A blind person getting around and reading where they couldn't do it before, " said Shaw. The center has more than a thousand devices to help the disabled and elderly needing help with communication, mobility, vision ,hearing, education, recreation, employment and daily living. At the center nothing is for sale, it is all about choices. "We want to help you find funding for the devices when possible and we want to make sure you get the right thing," said Stewart. It is best to schedule an appointment to get proper help at the Center. You can call 841-1548. |
