2009 is the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), marking the 400th anniversary of modern astronomy. The theme is "The Universe, Yours to Discover!" The telescope, originally referred to as a "spyglass," was first used in 1609. In this historic year, Galileo Galilei peered through the spyglass at the Empyrean, the ancient dwelling place for stars. His astronomical observations redefined scientific thought and explanation. For this, Galileo is considered the "Father of Modern Astronomy." Astronomy has made exponential leaps and bounds in knowledge and technology. The "spyglass" has evolved into the sophisticated collection of gadgets, gizmos, mirrors and lenses we call a telescope. Observations have changed how we view our world, our Solar System, our galaxy, and our Universe. Help us celebrate the advancement and achievements of astronomy by joining us every 4th Friday of each month, beginning January 23, at 1 & 4 p.m. We will be making 3-D constellations.
